Prime Minister Designate, Bruce Golding, has responded to the results of Jamaica Elections 2007 and the refusal of the former Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, to concede defeat.
Some of his words were:
"However perplexing we may find results, the people have voted...
We of the JLP respect the decision of Jamaica.
The final tally of seats will have to await the final recount and the Director of Elections.
The narrowness of this result causes significant challenges not just for the team and myself, but for the people of Jamaica.
I have not had the conversation with former PM Portia Simpson-Miller.
The Government needs the help of the Opposition to move this country forward.
The majority of people of Jamaica have placed their trust in us - we must honor their trust."
================
He thanked the voters, his team and all who managed the elections including the Electoral Office of Jamaica, the Security Forces and the media.
He congratulated all candidates who have won and those who have lost and has urged his supporters not to gloat, but to celebrate with moderation and if they're having a drink to offer the PNP supporters a drink.
If I might say, his speech was well said.
Surely Prime Minister - Designate, Bruce Golding has set the stage for cooperation in the governance of this country.
He has certainly, through his words, calmed what could easily have been a very troubling situation.
It's is my prayer that this spirit of calmness will permeate throughout the nation.
God bless Jamaica!
