The island-wide results of the Jamaica 2007 Elections are in!
One hour ago, 60 of 60 seats were declared by the Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ), with the:
Jamaica Labour Party (JLP): 31 seats
People's National Party (PNP): 29 seats
Congratulations to the JLP!
However!!!
We have just heard from the Returning Officer for St. James South, that the seat that was formally declared for the PNP's Derrick Kellier, cannot be declared! (This seat was contested by the JLP's Noel Donaldson.)
There will be recounting tomorrow, by the Electoral Office of Jamaica, to make the final decision for this seat.
Also !!!
Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller has refused to concede defeat!
She has said that the elections are too close to call. She will depend on the final count tomorrow and the following:
1) The PNP will be challenging constitutional issues regarding the US citizenship of some JLP candidates. As US citizens, candidates who have won, cannot become Members of Parliament.
2) There will be Magisterial recounting in constituencies that were close
3) She said that some PNP voters were barred from exercising their right to vote and that some people (implying JLP supporters) were buying votes...so this will be submitted to the Electoral Commission of Jamaica for review.
She also said that too many things happened today today to concede defeat.
Director of Elections, Danville Walker, has said that there will be recounting in all constituencies between 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m,tomorrow, September 4,2007. [Magisterial recounting must take place within four (4) days, by Jamaican law.]
We will keep you updated re what is happening...we are still awaiting word from Prime Minister Designate, Mr.Bruce Golding, re his response to the nation re the happenings, so far.
