Friends, we have very sad news this morning...Benazir Bhutto, the former Pakistani Prime Minster and current Pakistani Opposition Leader, was killed this morning (7:16 a.m EST and 6:16 p.m. Pakistani time) in Pakistan.
She was at a Political Rally (in Rawalpindi), in preparation for Pakistan's General Elections on January 8, 2008, when a lone suicide bomber shot her in the neck and chest and then blew himself up. So far, 16 other people have died along with Benazir, at the hands of this suicide bomber.
She was allegedly under tight security.
Harvard and Oxford-educated Bhutto was born in Karachi, Pakistan, in 1953. She was the eldest child of then-Prime Minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, a Pakistani of Sindhi extraction, and Begum ("Lady") Nusrat Bhutto, a Pakistani of Iranian-Kurdish extraction.
Benazir became interested in politics, during her 5-year imprisonment, which occurred just before her father's execution in 1978. (He was convicted of killing an opponent.)
Benazir came to be known, the world over, when she became the first woman to be elected as Prime Minister, in any post-colonial Muslim state (Pakistan) in 1988. As a testament of the Pakistani people's love for her as a leader, she was elected twice as Prime Minister.
However, twenty (20) months after being first-elected in 1988, Benazir was removed on alleged corruption charges, by then President, Ghulam Isaq Khan.
She was elected the second time, as Prime Minister, in 1993, when Farooq Leghari, then Pakistani President, booted her in 1996, on similar charges.
None of the five charges made against her, received a court conviction.
Benazir went into self-imposed exile in Dubai, in 1998 and returned to Pakistan on October 18, 2007, when current President,General Musharraf, agreed to grant her an amnesty and drop all corruption charges.
(She continued to manage her party, Pakistan People's Party (PPA) while in exile.)
On October 19, 2007, one day following her return, she survived an assassination attempt on her life.
According to Bloomberg.com's article,"Pakistan's Bhutto Assassinated in Attack at Rally (Update 2)", Benazir wrote the following, after her attack.
"I know that I am a symbol of what the so-called Jihadists, Taliban and al-Qaeda, most fear. I am a female political leader fighting to bring modernity, communication, education and technology to Pakistan.''
She was thought to be the only serious contender for the Prime Ministerial position, in the upcoming January 8, 2008 elections.
Benazir was 54 years old.
She is survived by her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, son Bilawal and two daughters, Bakhtawar and Aseefa.
We at Girl With a Purpose (GWAP) Blog, offer condolences to Benazir's family, the people of Pakistan and people the world over, who are grieving the death of this influential woman, who has helped shaped the political history of Pakistan and indeed the world!
