(This information was updated on August 20,2010).
With the absence of World Champion and Olympic Gold Medallist, Melaine Walker, from the women's 400 m hurdles due to injury, it's been gratifying to see another Jamaican, Kaliese Spencer, step up to the plate and run the 400m Hurdles so well, at the 2010 Diamond League Meet.
(Kaliese was the World Junior Champion in the 400m Hurdles in 2006).
Coming from 6th position in the women's 400m hurdles at the first Diamond League Meet in Shanghai China on May 23, to consistently coming 1st or 2nd in the last five (5) events, means that Kaliese tops the table as the woman with the most points in the event.
This makes her forerunner for the USD $40,000 diamond in her event and sees her making prize money of at least US $37,500 in this year's Diamond League.
The prize monies for the different Diamond League placements are as follows:
Place Prize Money
1st → 10,000 USD
2nd → 6,000 USD
3rd → 4,000 USD
4th → 3,000 USD
5th → 2,500 USD
6th → 2,000 USD
7th → 1,500 USD
8th → 1,000 USD.
So Kaliese's prize money calculated over the 1st six (6) events = placements of 6th, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st and 1st = prize monies of $2,000+ $6,000+ $6,000+ $8,000+ $10,000+ $10,000 = $40,000.
[Her nearest competitor is current world no.1 in the event, the USA's Lashinda Demus, whose prize money so far stands at US $33,000. Demus' placements over the six (6) events were 1st, 1st, 1st, DNA, 4th and DNA, where DNA = Did Not Appear].
We wish Kaliese all the best at the final Diamond League Meet in Brussels...we'll be praying that you'll win the race and so get the diamond, Kaliese!
[I would like to thank Phil McElhinney for the use of his Flickr inset picture of Kaliese Spencer winning her race, at the 2010 Aviva London Grand Prix (another Diamond League Meet) in England].
