Rising Stars Finale

Rising Stars is the Jamaican version of American Idol - minus the off-screen drama :) and is a production of Television Jamaica. (It's main sponsor is Digicel Jamaica).

Friday night, October 6, 2006, came...

The stage had been set...

This would be the last time that the two remaining finalists would face the nation as contestants  for the Rising Stars crown.

Both took centre stage at the Courtleigh Hotel Auditorium.

Nickeisha Barnes was first and performed the first of her two songs:

"To Sir With Love", by Lulu.

One Third followed with their first song as well:

"The Reason" by Hoobastank.

Then Nickeisha  Barnes performed song number 2, "I Will Survive", made popular by Gloria Gaynor.

(This young lady's voice range is just great, I feel she can handle any song she puts her mind to).

Then One Third tantalized us with,"She's Got Me - Medley on the Half-Way-Tree Riddim".

The judges congratulated both finalists for reaching so far in the contest.

Then we waited.

And then, at exactly 9:54 p.m., we heard the results...

The final tally of votes was in..

One Third was now the new Rising Stars for 2006!!!!!

The in-studio crowd at the Courtleigh Auditorium went wild!

The 4,000 strong sold-out crowd at Mas Camp, the venue for the Rising Stars Concert, which was aired simultaneously, went ballistic!

Not bad for three (3) young men who stole the hearts of most Jamaican females.

They walked away with JMD $1,000,000/USD $15,138.3, JMD $100,000/USD $1,513.83 worth of free credit from Digicel, a management contract from Shocking Vibes Productions Limited (one of Jamaica's premier artist management power houses) and JMD $30,000/USD $454.15 from the Jamaica Business Development Centre to aid in the development of their music careers.

Nickeisha was gracious in defeat, but went away with JMD $600,000/USD $9,082.96, JMD $100,000/USD $1,513.83 worth of free credit from Digicel and JMD $30,000/USD $454.15 from the Jamaica Business Development Centre to aid in the development of her music career.

No chump change :)...

Well, no doubt we'll hear a lot more from these two in the very near future.

We at Girl With a Purpose wish Nickeisha and One Third, all the best in their budding careers as musical artists!

We look forward to hearing of your continued success in the music business!

Rising Stars Update

Rising Stars is the Jamaican version of American Idol - minus the off-screen drama :) and is a production of Television Jamaica. (It's main sponsor is Digicel Jamaica).

Oh goodness...I can now breathe...whew!:)

I tell you, Rising Stars on Sunday night was hot!...do let me catch my breath :).

Nickeisha Barnes performed three songs:

1)  "I’m Going Down" by Mary J Blige, in which she gave a stellar performance as usual

2)  "A Medley of Songs" by Alaine Laughton, which really demonstrated Nickeisha's full voice range

3) "Karma" by Alicia Keys.

At the end of her performances, judge Anthony Miller, who had chosen Nickeisha as his wild card to be among the 10 finalists,  really said what the Jamaican public felt,  that she stood alone, but stood tall.

I tell you this girl is not only a star, but an excellent singer!

And, let me get to One Third (the other heat-givers of the night):

They sang:

1) "Homely Girl" by the Shylites, which was an excellent performance!

2) "Africa" by Toto, which was a very dangerous song to do in the final round, due to the highly pitched notes. But they pulled it off, for the most part. One of the trio was “off key” during segments of their rendition, but the judges thought that their performance stamped the night.

Judge Clyde McKenzie reminded us that Toto had won eight (8) Grammy Awards for the Africa album and remarked that One Third really did justice to the song.

3) "Medley on the Half-Way-Tree Riddim".

After One Third's performances, the girls in studio were hot...the girls in front of their TV sets were hot. I tell you, on Sunday night, most Jamaicans had unusually high temperatures, and it was not as a result of the climate!:)

Judge Nadine Sutherland thought that One Third , "blew the roof off".

Well, as Friday October 6, 2006, approaches, we're all waiting with bated breath to see who will win the Rising Stars crown...

Will it be three boys or a girl?...

The jury is still out:).

Rising Stars Elimination Show

Rising Stars is the Jamaican version of American Idol - minus the off-screen drama :) and is a production of Television Jamaica. (It's main sponsor is Digicel Jamaica).

As predicted, Suzanne Perkins was voted off of Rising Stars on Friday Night.

The youngest finalist ever, Suzanne went home with JMD $400,000  or USD $6,056.02.

Suzanne's sister had given gave her the transportation money to go to the Rising Stars Preliminary Bout in Negril – saying that if she didn’t get through to be one of the ten (10) finalists, she wasn’t to come back home :).

Well Suzanne is now certainly returning home and with a whole bag of cash!  Hopefully she will use the money, wisely, to further her education. (She likes to shop and wants to go to cosmetology school).

The two remaining finalists - Nickeisha Barnes and One Third, will perform three (3) songs on Sunday night - two(2) of which will be their favorites from the series.

Suzanne (dubbed the Queen of Jamaica's Hearts by judge, Clyde McKenzie) bowed out tonight with her rendition of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song".

We await the other performances on Sunday! :).

Rising Stars Update

Rising Stars is the Jamaican version of American Idol - minus the off-screen drama :) and is a production of Television Jamaica. (It's main sponsor is Digicel Jamaica).

Well, well, well. We're down to the final three(3): One Third, Nickeisha Barnes and Suzanne Perkins.

Apparently the going consensus among the younger viewing public was that Brushy One String was too "old". They felt that he should give the young people "a chance". So they voted him off.

My opinion is that Brushy brought originality to this contest. I really enjoyed his original songs and all the theatrics around his performances...he always kept us guessing.

But I guess originality was not a key factor among the majority of the Jamaican voting public.

You could visibly see judge, Anthony Miller, smarting at the public's decision :).

So the final three(3) battled it out on Sunday.

One Third, I think could have done better with their cover of Air Supply's "Lonely is the Night", but all three judges, Anthony Miller, Nadine Sutherland and Clyde McKenzie thought their performance was stellar.

Nickeisha Barnes' rendition of Tanya Stephens' "These Streets", was just "off the roof". She also did great justice to Alicia Keys' "Karma" . I think her performance was the best for the night...she made a few slip-ups, but her overall performance was just great!

Suzanne Perkins tried, she really did with her cover of "Killing Me Softly With His Song", by Roberta Flack.

Unfortunately, I think the public will vote her off on Friday.

Well, we're all sitting at the edge of our seats waiting for Friday night (when we'll know which two finalists will go to the final round)  to come around...I tell you, more Jamaicans will be glued to their television sets than there are hairs on a water buffalo! :)

Rising Stars Update

Judges Anthony Miller, Nadine Sutherland and Clyde McKenzie of course, make the final decision as to who stays for the next round, but it' s the public's votes that determine who automatically goes ahead, versus those who face the "sing off".

The "sing off" (also known as the Rising Stars Results Show) is where the two contestants with the least votes, sing the song they did on the previous Sunday night. The judges then decide who remains in the contest, based on their opinion of who performed best.

Tonight's Rising Stars lived up to the excitement that has been brewing all week!

Although Brushy One String’s (he plays on a guitar with one string) original was brushed off by judges, I thought his performance was pretty good!

The judges said that Kimanda Cunningham’s performance was raging, but I don’t think she did her best tonight. Her voice just wasn't right for the song, "That's the Way It Is", made popular by Celine Dion.

One Third was great too...

But guess who came out of her shell tonight? Nuh Suzanne Perkins! She really did justice to Diana King's, "Shy Guy".

Nickeisha Barnes continues to shine throughout this competition and did her usual best!:)

She won my approval the second I heard her rendition, two weeks ago, of, "To Sir With Love", by Lulu.

This girl can sing!

Well, we'll wait to see what the Jamaican public says about the performances tonight. I wonder if they'll get it right, this time?:)
