Team Jamaica, London 2012 Olympics: Swimming - Alia Atkinson's Gift!

Team Jamaica's Alia Atkinson, gave Jamaica a gift yesterday, in the form of an 8th semifinal place, to make it to the finals of the women's 100m breaststroke at the London 2012 Olympics, today!

 

Alia Atkinson's Progress to the Finals

1. Alia won heat 3 in 1:07.39s - a new personal best and national record, which qualified her for semifinals-2.



2. In her semifinal race, she tied with Canada's Tera Van Breilen,  for an overall 8th place, in 1:07.48s. A swim-off was needed to determine who'd be the 8th person to enter the final.

   
   (A swim-off involves the two tied swimmers racing against each other to determine a winner. The winner then wins the place vied for - 8th semifinal place going into the finals).


3. Alia won the swim-off  in 1:06.79 s  - the 5th fastest time going into the finals today at 2:13 pm Jamaica time (3:13 pm EST)


4. In doing so, she set a new personal best time and a new Jamaican national record.

 

We look forward to Alia's race  today [at 7:13 p.m. GMT, 2:13 pm Jamaica time (3:13 pm EST)] and are expecting great things from her!

 

Please also remember to support Samantha Albert and her horse, Carraig Dubh,  in the Equestrian Individual Eventing (Show Jumping) tomorrow..her event starts at  10:30 am GMT( 5:30 a.m. Jamaica time or 6:30 am EST).

 

Samantha gained 50 penalty points in the Individual Eventing (Cross Country) stage, today, to place her 17th in that competition so far.

 

She has a total of 121.2 penalty points from both the Equestrian Individual Eventing (Dressage and Cross Country stages), for placement of 38th out of 74 entries  for her event - Equestrian (Individual Eventing).

Team Jamaica, London 2012 Olympics: Equestrian - Dressage Results

The London 2012 Olympics continued today with Team Jamaica (the Jamaican team), being aptly represented in the Equestrian (Eventing) event.

 

This event consists of three stages:

1) The Dressage competition 

2) Cross Country Racing

3) Show Jumping.

 

The  following are the results for Team Jamaica's Samantha Albert  for the Dressage competition, which she completed today, on her horse, Carraig Dubh - a 12 year-old gelding with which  she started working 6 months ago.

 

Samantha unfortunately received 67.2 penalty points which placed her 34th of 34 entries.

 

(To do excellently at the Dressage, Samantha would have had to be working withCarraig Dubh for a number of years..unfortunately the horse with which Samantha had this relationship, got injured 6 months ago and Carraig Dubh became her substitute horse.

 

But he did well, seeing that this was his first time at a major competition like this and we do wish them both well, not just for the Olympics, but for the future...

 

He's a horse that shows a lot of promise).

 

 

Samantha hopes to do better in the Cross Country (her favorite competition) on Monday and Show Jumping (on Tuesday)...so that she can place in the top 25 of 74 entries.

Special Note to CVM Television(the only television station authorized to air this event, live in Jamaica) - we need to see some more of this event...to better expose our youngsters to the possibility of them doing this event in a few years' time.

 

Yes, equestrian is an expensive sport...but the possibilities are endless when we introduce our youth to wide variety of sports...we need more Jamaicans participating in this event!

 

Samantha is paving the way...let's take up the baton and run wid (with) it!!!

 

Jamaica's Alia Atkinson will be up tomorrow in the 100m breastroke (women)   in Heat 3  of this event at approximately 10:43 am(GMT) [ i.e. 5:43 am (Jamaica time) and 6:43  am (EST)].

Friends, the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics is tomorrow.
