Yu vote yet? (the Jamaican equivalent to "Have you voted as yet?"), is the popular question of the day, as Jamaicans anxiously await the finals of the Digicel Rising Stars competition tonight!
[Digicel Rising Stars is the Jamaican equivalent of American Idol, where singers compete for the top prize of Jamaican dollar (JMD) $1 million dollars (US Dollar/USD $13,821.7) and a record contract.
Viewers text or call in their votes for the singers they want to advance to the finals of the competition, and eventually to win the top prize.
The runner-up (the person who comes 2nd) gets JMD $600,000 (USD $8,293) and the second runner-up (the person who comes 3rd) gets JMD $400,000 (USD $5,528.7).
The competition's main sponsor is Digicel, the Caribbean's leading provider of mobile services. (Other sponsors include KFC, Pepsico, the Knutsford Court Hotel and the Courtleigh Auditorium.)]
After a period of just over five (5) months of competition, where the ten (10) national finalists were chosen from the top ten (10) Parish finalists from six (6) different regions, we are now down to two (2): female songstress, Cameal Davis and the 5-boy group,Khalil.
3-girl group, SLR, got the third prize of JMD $400,000 (USD $5,528.7) last week.
Both Cameal and Khalil are great performers, so Jamaicans really have a tough decision on our hands.
Based on their performance on Sunday night, at the last Digicel Rising Stars Performance Show and comments from people on the street, I would say Cameal is very likely to get the nod from the Jamaican public.
Overall, the comments from the judges were more favorable towards her too, although Khalil was greatly encouraged by Rising Star judges Nadine Sutherland, Clyde McKenzie and guest judge Chris Smith (famous music promoter.)
(The Rising Star judge known for his 'biting' but truthfull comments, Anthony Miller, virtually told Khalil, that Cameal gets his nod for winner of the competition. :))
The performers will perform for the final time at the Courtleigh Auditorium, tonight, in New Kingston, where the winner will be announced.
But Mas Camp, Oxford Road, will be all the rave, with artists like Busy Signal, Elephant Man, Marcia Griffiths, Christopher Martin (Digicel Rising Star winner 2006) and Romain Virgo (Digicel Rising Stars winner 2007) set to perform for the filled-to-capacity crowd.
(There will be a big screen erected at Mas Camp, so that the audience there can see the show, live, from the Courtleigh Auditorium.)
The winner and runner-up will then go to Mas Camp, to perform for the audience gathered there as well.
Tickets for the Courtleigh Auditorium and Mas Camp cost $500 and the proceeds will go to the Best Care Children's Home.
